ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

Job Summary: The Animal Control Officer II enforces ordinances, regulations and laws regarding animal care, service, and violations. The Animal Control Officer II will patrol within the City limits, respond to complaints, impounding animals, providing assistance to the general public, assistance in caring for animals at the shelter, maintaining the animal shelter and removing wild animals from residential areas. Other duties may include maintaining equipment, disposing of dead animals and collaborating with other department employees within the city.

Minimum Job Requirements:

1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
2. Certification in one of the following:
   1. Animal Control Basic Officer Certification
      1. Must obtain a basic Animal Control Officer (ACO) certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within the probationary period.
   2. Euthanasia Technician.
      1. Must obtain a Euthanasia certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within the probationary period.
   3. Veterinary Technician.
   4. Or a valid professional animal control related training and/or certification from a State or National recognized organization
3. A valid state driver’s license.

All Animal Control Officer IIs hired without one of the above certifications will be hired as an Animal Control Officer I and will be considered in training until certification is achieved by the end of 12 months of employment.

Animal Control Officer I is required to have a High School Diploma or GED, a valid State Driver’s license and a general liking for animals.

Essential Job Functions:

• Works with the public to assist, respond and provide information and education pertaining to animal related inquiries.
• Captures both domestic and wild animals and livestock, using equipment and methods appropriate for animal abatement and control; may require chasing, climbing fences and crawling under houses.
• Inspects and investigate animal facilities and complaints regarding animal welfare/cruelty, vicious or dangerous animals, animal bites and animal nuisances, to explains violations and ensure compliance.
• Issues citations, licenses, warnings and/or legal notices; enforces licensing laws.
• Maintains appropriate records and documents on investigations, citizen complaints, adoptions, euthanasia and other paperwork as required.
• Performs humane euthanasia procedures as required and properly disposes of deceased animals.
• Assists in community outreach programs and adoption events as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of federal, state and local laws relating to animals in the State of Texas.
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures relating to animals such as animal body
• language, animal handling etc.

Skills in:

• Providing exceptional external and internal customer service.
• Communicating effectively.

• Enforcing regulations with tact and good judgment.
• Working well under pressure with flexibility and professionalism.
• Operating a personal computer and various software programs.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and

may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme

elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level,

moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Working with a wide variety of people.

Ability to work weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules.
